In fact I think the current version of the open source driver probably performs a lot better than the old proprietary driver ever did. On the ATI homepage it says that I have to get mobility drivers from my notebook manufacturer, but I can't get them there because it doesn't support linux... For the most recent releases of Ubuntu (and its flavours) this driver is usually as fast as the closed-source, proprietary fglrx driver (called AMD Catalyst) from AMD Inc.
